cycling in London
AOI and Transport for London organised an illustration competition to celebrate cycling!
Deadline for entries: 17 May 2010 by 5pm
Whoever you are and wherever you look a revolution is taking place. Cycling is quickly becoming a part of the fabric of everyday life in London. During Summer 2010, Transport for London will will join the revolution with the launch of its Cycle Superhighways and Cycle Hire Schemes as well as a host of other initiatives to improve cycle safety and security. In conjunction with these programmes, London Transport Museum and the Association of Illustrators are delighted to announce a call for illustrations featuring cycling as an emerging mode of transport in London.
Students and professionals are invited to submit entries that demonstrate the environmental, health and/or recreational benefits of cycling. It is the task of entrants to create an illustration that shows cycling as a fun and efficient way to get around the city.
The top three entries will receive a monetary award and may be used in an advertising campaign for cycling. The top 50 entries will be displayed in an exhibition at the London Transport Museum that will open in summer 2010 in conjunction with the launch of TfL’s cycling programmes.
Competition Prizes
Cash prizes will be awarded in three levels.
First prize: £2000
Second prize: £1000
Third prize: £750
How to submit your entry
The competion is free to enter and you can enter as many images as you wish.
1. Prepare your image
Your image should measure 1200 pixels on the longest edge, be in RGB mode and saved as either a jpg or gif. Name your file(s) sequentially and with your surname and initial separated by an underscore i.e.smith_f_01.jpg
Where possible use Photoshop's 'save for web' feature. Your resultant filesize should come in at under 1mb.

'Between 5 and 26 November London is bubbling over with international comics during the Comica Festival's annual three-week season of exhibitions, events, talks, performances, workshops, films, a conference and publishers' fair at the Institute of Contemporary Arts in The Mall and other venues.'

NEW opportunities
Illustration/GD competition
Artists, illustrators, designers of all levels. We're looking for mailable artworks to exhibit as part of a group show entitled 'MAIL ART' in January 2010. 'MAIL ART' was realised by Long Gallery Coordinator Alison Stockwell in response to the number of submissions the gallery recieved from UK based artists outside Glasgow who wished to exhibit but didn't have the funds to travel to Glasgow with their work. By inviting artists to send select pieces of work by post it gives them the opportunity to exhibit as part of a larger group exhibition without incurring any travel costs. As part of 'MAIL ART' artist Susan Mortimer, creator of Mail Art One Zine, will be making a special edition of her zine featuring selected work from exhibiting artists. There will be a limited amount of copies available free during the exhibition.

- All work must be submitted by post and be no larger than a standard large envelope. Sorry but we cannot accept work that cannot be wall mounted.
- As the work will be displayed in a public and family environment we cannot exhibit any work that is of an explicit nature.
- Mail Art Zine - Work can be any size to fit A5 and on paper (see website below for details).
- Everyone who’s work is selected for the exhibition zine will receive a copy of the issue.
- Unfortunately we cannot pay anyone for their work as Mail Art is free.
- If you wish to have your work returned to you after the exhibition please enclose a self addressed, stamped envelope.
- Deadline: 26th November ‘09
We want you to design images and posters that we can display at national, regional and local events that encourage young people to go to www.myplatform2.com and sign up to be sent off, or images that stress just how evil poverty is. There is no huge cash prize but we will give the best designs a bag full of goodies and you will be doing your part in helping rid the world of the scandal that is poverty… oh and we can give you some chocolate! (fair trade of course).
Design/illustrate/create an image of any size for display which encourages young people between 18-25 to go to www.myplatform2.com. OR: to join the fight against poverty.

Ctrl.Alt.Shift comic competition
Ctrl.Alt.Shift is looking for submissions for their comic design competition, Ctrl.Alt.Shift Unmasks Poverty.
Oscar nominated Marjane Satrapi, V V Brown and Lightspeed Champion are amongst the judges for the Ctrl.Alt.Shift Unmasks Corruption competition. Corruption is both a cause of poverty, and a barrier to overcoming it. It is one of the most serious obstacles to eradicate.
Entrants to the competition will be in with the chance to create a unique comic style story in collaboration with acclaimed musician and writer Dev Hynes aka Lightspeed Champion. After the first round of judging at the end of September, shortlisted entrants will be given Lightspeed Champion's comic script as inspiration and asked to create a visual adaptation of the story.
The winning commission will be published in a comic alongside new work exploring the issue of Corruption by some of comic’s greatest talents. The work will also be showcased as part of a new exhibition, Ctrl.Alt.Shift Unmasks Corruption, later this year at Lazarides Gallery, Soho.
To enter the competition please send relevant examples of your visual work along with your contact details to Ctrl.Alt.Shift by Friday 25th September by visiting the website.
Five shortlisted artists will then be given a comic brief to respond to and a winner chosen by a panel of judges including: Marjane Satrapi (Writer and Director of Academy Award Nominated Animated Film Persepolis) Paul Gravett (Comica founder), V V Brown and David Allain (Musician and Comic Book Writer/Artist duo), Lightspeed Champion and Ctrl.Alt.Shift.
The competition is restricted to UK Residents only.
